Replacing software you have outgrown

Migrations off systems that cannot go offline, cannot be rewritten at once, and cannot stay as they are.

  • Incremental migration
  • Data extraction
  • Running old and new in parallel

The systems most worth replacing are the ones it is most dangerous to replace. They hold years of data, nobody remaining wrote them, and the business does not stop while the work happens.

So it is done in pieces, with the old system and the new one running alongside each other until the new one has earned the traffic. The first deliverable is usually not code — it is an honest map of what depends on what, because that is what determines the order everything else has to happen in.
